Meet Kim Curtis

Kim Curtis, M.S., CCC-SLP, is a licensed speech-language pathologist and the founder of Speech & Literacy Connection. She specializes in language and literacy, with particular focus on the pre-literacy and early literacy foundations that reading and writing are built on.

Kim holds a Master of Science in Communication Disorders from Emerson College, an MBA from California Lutheran University, and a Bachelor of Arts from UCLA. She holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and is licensed as a speech-language pathologist in the State of California.

Her experience spans a range of pediatric clinical settings, and her practice is built on assessment-driven, evidence-based intervention tailored to each child’s individual profile.

Where Literacy Begins

Reading and writing are closely connected to oral language development. As a speech-language pathologist, I approach literacy through the lens of language, strengthening the foundational skills that reading and writing depend on.

Literacy development begins long before children learn to read. Its foundations emerge through spoken language, shared book reading, sound awareness, and early interactions with print.

This is where much of my work is focused. Services include pre-literacy and early literacy development, targeting alphabet knowledge, letter recognition, print awareness, phonological awareness, and beginning reading and spelling skills.

How I Work

Therapy is structured, explicit, and individualized. Literacy intervention for dyslexia and other reading difficulties is informed by principles from the Science of Reading and focuses on the specific skills that support reading development. Skills are taught directly, practiced systematically, and built over time to support meaningful progress in reading, written language, and oral language.

At the same time, sessions are responsive and relationship-centered. Children learn best when they feel motivated, supported, and understood, and therapy is designed to balance structured intervention with connection and engagement.

Training & Approach

My clinical work is grounded in structured literacy and language-based reading intervention, consistent with the International Dyslexia Association’s Knowledge and Practice Standards for teaching reading.

Rather than following a single program, intervention is guided by clinical reasoning, evidence-based practice, and an understanding of each child’s individual strengths and needs.
